Project Introduction
A collaborative project involving visual artists from Thailand, Norway, Indonesia, Russia and Japan with diverse cultural backgrounds has been initiated under the leadership of South Korea's 413 Beta and Singapore's Singapore Art Museum. The project presents a collaborative model that aims to address the prevalent individualism and unsustainability in contemporary society while promoting independent artistic activities in urban centres across national borders. The project began in May this year with a two-month exhibition at 413 Beta, an independent exhibition space in Munrae-dong, Seoul. The results of this domestic exhibition were presented to an international audience at the Singapore Art Museum in September. Screening programmes and Tour&Talk programmes will take place in Seoul and Jeju in October and November respectively. The entire project will be documented in an archive book to be distributed to five countries worldwide, including Korea, in December.
The Screening Program will feature three works by Russian media artist Dina Karaman. Karaman's work explores borderlands intertwined with national desires and narratives, and the development of new cities that evoke both fantasy and nightmare. The discussion will explore how video recordings connect us temporally and spatially, and how they can be linked to the underlying unstable psychological states and urgencies within spaces.
The Talk Program with Sen Takahashi, a Japanese artist with a Korean mother from Jeju Island, will explore his journey of discovering his cultural identity and connecting with his 'hometown'. Together with curators from Japan and Korea, he will walk around Jeju Island, tracing memories and conducting detailed historical analysis. Based on this field research, he will engage with the audience to initiate a dialogue aimed at halting the gradual process of forgetting.
The Art Book will document the entire project, which began in May. In addition to the works presented in the exhibition, it will include the results of independent artistic activities. Artists of different nationalities will explore the discourses of contemporary art communities in their respective cities through the lens of materiality.
