Project Introduction
The fourth collaborative project presented by Korea·A·Round Culture 2025 is a Korea–China Women’s Gukgeuk, the female traditional opera. In celebration of the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, the Korea Women’s Gukgeuk Art Association and Yanbian Alilang Theater join forces to bring the life and spirit of poet Yun Dong-ju to the stage. Even during the dark years of Japanese colonial rule, Yun’s quiet yet earnest words expressing his love for his homeland and people continue to move audiences today. This collaboration, marking both the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation and the 80th anniversary of Yun Dong-ju’s passing, began in Yanbian, where his birthplace and grave are located, tracing the poet’s footsteps. Audiences in both countries will experience Yun Dong-ju’s life, legacy, and the shared historical emotions that transcend borders through the form of Women’s Gukgeuk. The performance was held on September 30 and October 1 at Changshin Art Hall in the Jongno-gu Community Center as part of the 2025 Yun Dong-ju Literature Festival hosted by the Jongno Cultural Foundation, and will be presented to local audiences at Yanbian Alilang Theater in December.
