Project Introduction
-Not a reenactment of tragedy, but a response traversing 84 years- "This is not a recovery, but a long-overdue rescue."
In 1942, at the Chosei Coal Mine in Japan, there were those who fought to survive until the very end within the submerged tunnels.
As the years passed, the entrance to the Chosei Mine was sealed, and the fact of their existence began to fade from memory. Yet, in that silence, some began to act to ensure they were remembered.
Morikawa and those who set out to find their names, the forgotten entrance, and their remains...
The play "Chosei Coal Mine – I Wanted to Live" is not merely a work that records death. It is a chronicle of an encounter: between those who waited for rescue until the end inside the tunnels, and those who, across the vast span of time, are determined to bring them back to life.
Through this play, we witness that those who lost their youth trapped in dark shafts amidst the whirlpool of war were individuals who dreamed of the future, loved their reality, and desperately wanted to live.
We also witness the enduring presence of those who have dedicated their lives to bringing those long-submerged desires to the surface.
