Project Introduction

Six Inuit artists from 'Kinngait', a community in the Canadian Arctic, have collaborated on three drawings that will be transformed into a large-scale mural for the 「15th Gwangju Biennale - Canadian Pavilion」. In a unique "site-specific collaboration," three Korean artists will contribute to the creation of this immersive artwork.   This cross-cultural project, bridging Canadian and Korean artistic traditions, will be showcased at the Yangnim Art Center, Gwangju from September to December. Simultaneous exhibitions will take place in Toronto and Kinngait.

The Inuit artists' reflections on profound thoughts have resonated with artists in Korea, inspiring a rich cross-cultural exchange. By visiting each other's homelands, both groups have gained a new understanding of place and identity, which they have expressed through their art. Traditionally, Canadian Inuit art emphasizes forms such as printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. In contrast, Korean artists introduce dynamic elements to these tranquil expressions through contemporary approaches, including sound and media art, painting, and installation art.
