Project Introduction

 The heartwarming diary of a Korean independence activist couple, Jessie's Diary, chronicling their experiences raising their daughter, Jessie, in China, is being adapted into a unique reading musical. Seven talented Korean musical actors will portray the couple and their daughter, while two Chinese actors will bring to life the Chinese individuals who supported their cause. This collaboration will explore the shared history of suffering and resilience of both Korea and China during the turbulent times of the Japanese colonial era. The musical will be staged at YeonHee Art Hall in Seoul in mid-September, with plans for a Shanghai performance next April.

 Based on the original work, Jessie's Diary, the musical narrates the heartwarming yet challenging experiences of a Korean independence activist couple raising their daughter, Jessie, in China. The family's journey mirrors the path of the Korean Provisional Government as it traversed from Guangzhou to Chongqing in China in its pursuit of independence. The musical unfolds through a theatrical device where the protagonist, Jessie, encounters her younger parents, Woojo and Sunhwa, as she opens her diary. Through this encounter, Jessie reflects on her parents' often clumsy but loving parenting and the arduous yet hopeful journey of their independence movement. In doing so, she gains a profound understanding of her value to her parents and the depth of their love for their country.
