Project Introduction

The fifth project presented under <2025 Korea∙A∙Round Culture> is a Korea-Japan Traditional Performing Arts Collaboration. Aufwind, a Korean ensemble that explores new possibilities of contemporary art through traditional wind instruments, collaborates with MAHORABA, one of Japan’s most notable traditional music ensembles, to create a performance that fuses Korea’s Cheoyongmu and Japan’s Noh. Starting from the imaginative question, “What if Cheoyong, who once arrived at the shores of Ulsan during the Silla period, traveled on to Japan?” this project reinterprets Cheoyong as a cultural mediator connecting the two countries. Cheoyongmu and Noh, each a representative form of traditional dance-music theater in Korea and Japan, both address the interaction between the human and the divine. Drawing on this shared foundation, the two teams have crafted an original performance that layers contemporary interpretation onto tradition. Audiences will experience a harmonious blend of the two nations’ familiar yet newly transformed traditional arts, encountering a message of healing and harmony. This performance was held on October 2 at the Namsan Gugakdang in Seoul and will be staged again in April 2026 at Kita City Hokutopia in Tokyo.
